As Pope John Paul II wrote in 1981 in his encyclical Familiaris Consortio (On the Christian Family), “The right and duty of parents to give education is essential, since it is connected with the transmission of human life; it is original and primary with regard to the educational role of others on account of the uniqueness of the loving relationship between parents and children; and it is irreplaceable and inalienable and therefore incapable of being entirely delegated to others or usurped by others.” Just as parents cooperate with God in creation (procreators), so do they cooperate with God’s will in their children’s salvation. Any formal educational institution can never replace parents in their role, but instead becomes an extension of the family. Recognizing parents’ great responsibility as the primary educators of their children, our faculty and staff work each day as stewards in harmony with our parents to educate their children’s minds, form their consciences, and immerse them in all that is good, true, and beautiful.
